Quick answer

Allo Dental Clinic is a CDCP dentist in Toronto. We accept Canadian Dental Care Plan patients at 3455 Yonge St in North York and bill Sun Life directly, so you pay only your co-payment and any amount the plan does not cover, shown in a written estimate before treatment begins.

The CDCP is a Government of Canada plan that helps eligible residents with the cost of dental care. As of July 31, 2026, it covers 4,504,690 people nationally, 1,836,321 of them in Ontario[12]. Since June 2025 it is open to eligible residents of every age[14]. It is administered by Sun Life on the government's behalf[6], and this page walks through how it actually behaves at a dental clinic.

A / Eligibility

Who qualifies for the CDCP in 2026?

Four conditions, all set by the Government of Canada. Service Canada decides eligibility, not the clinic, but here is the checklist in plain language.

You qualify for the CDCP in 2026 if you have no access to private dental insurance, your adjusted family net income is under $90,000, you and your spouse or partner filed last year's Canadian tax return, and you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes[2]. All four must hold, and eligibility is re-confirmed every year[2].

The four conditions

  • No access to private dental insurance, through your own or a family member’s work, a pension, a student organization, or a purchased policy. Having access but not using it still counts as access.
  • Adjusted family net income under $90,000 for the previous tax year.
  • You (and your spouse or common-law partner) filed last year’s tax return and received a notice of assessment.
  • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Worth knowing

  • Coverage through government programs, such as Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Works or ODSP, does not disqualify you. Benefits are coordinated instead.
  • One exception on the insurance rule: retirees who opted out of pension dental coverage before December 11, 2023 and cannot opt back in may still qualify.
  • Nobody is enrolled automatically, including seniors. Everyone applies, and everyone renews annually.
  • The CDCP never asks you to pay to apply or renew. Anything that does is a scam.

Details and edge cases: Government of Canada eligibility page[2] and program hub[1].

B / Costs

How much will you pay at the dentist with the CDCP?

Two numbers decide it: your co-payment tier, and the gap between the CDCP fee and the dentist's fee. The second one is easy to miss, and it matters.

With the CDCP, what you pay depends on your adjusted family net income: below $70,000 the plan pays 100% of the CDCP established fee, from $70,000 to $79,999 it pays 60%, and from $80,000 to $89,999 it pays 40%[3]. The rest, plus any difference between the CDCP fee and the provider's fee, is paid by you, directly to the clinic[3].

CDCP co-payment tiers for the 2026–27 benefit year, by adjusted family net income[3]
Adjusted family net incomeCDCP paysYour co-payment
Under $70,000100% of the CDCP fee0%, though additional charges can still apply
$70,000 – $79,99960% of the CDCP fee40%, plus any additional charges
$80,000 – $89,99940% of the CDCP fee60%, plus any additional charges

Why you might still get a bill, even at 100%

Even at the 100% tier, the CDCP pays its own fee schedule, not your dentist's fee, so a balance can remain. The government puts it directly: you may have to pay fees in addition to the co-payment when the cost of your care is more than what the CDCP will reimburse, or when you agree to services the plan does not cover[3]. CDCP fees are set independently of provincial fee guides and reassessed annually[8].

Under the government's own worked example, the same $145 cleaning costs a CDCP patient $11, $64.60 or $91.40 depending on income tier[4]. The example is two units of scaling at a provider fee of $145 against a CDCP established fee of $134; each tier pays its co-payment share plus the $11 difference.

The government's worked example: two units of scaling, provider fee $145, CDCP established fee $134[4]
Income tierCo-payment on $134Difference to $145You pay
CDCP pays 100%$0.00$11.00$11.00
CDCP pays 60%$53.60$11.00$64.60
CDCP pays 40%$80.40$11.00$91.40

At Allo Dental, that gap does not currently apply to covered care: as of September 3, 2026, our fees for CDCP-covered services match the CDCP fee grid, so for covered treatment your co-payment is normally your only cost. Fee schedules change over time, both ours and the plan's, so this statement is accurate as of that date; please contact the clinic for the current details before you book.

The rule that surprises people

Sun Life can only reimburse oral health providers, never CDCP members. If you pay the full cost yourself, the plan cannot pay you back[6]. Direct billing is not a convenience under the CDCP; it is the only way the plan pays.

How Allo handles it
  • We bill Sun Life directly. You pay only your share at the desk.
  • Our fees for CDCP-covered services match the CDCP fee grid as of September 3, 2026. Fees change over time, so ask us for the current details when you book.
  • You get a written estimate before treatment: the CDCP portion, your co-payment, and any difference, itemized.
  • For larger work, we can send the estimate to Sun Life first to confirm what the plan expects to pay.
  • Payment plans are available for treatment over $1,000, so a non-covered portion never forces a rushed decision.
C / Coverage

What does the CDCP cover?

The plan covers most everyday dentistry and much of the bigger restorative work, with frequency limits and preauthorization on some items. Here is the map, matched to what we do at Allo.

The CDCP covers exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride and sealants, fillings, root canals, gum care, extractions and oral surgery, crowns, and complete dentures, subject to frequency limits, and with preauthorization required for items such as crowns, partial dentures and deeper sedation[3][5]. Orthodontic services are currently not available under the plan[3].

The full list: every dental service the CDCP can cover

The Government of Canada names 35 dental services in 8 categories that the CDCP could cover when an oral health provider recommends them, within the plan's frequency limits and after your co-payment[3]. 10 of them need preauthorization from Sun Life before treatment, and orthodontic services are currently not available[3]. The table keeps the government's own wording and adds one column: where each service happens for Allo patients.

  • Covered — the CDCP pays its established fee for this service, less your co-payment, within the plan's frequency limits.
  • Covered with preauthorization — the same, once Sun Life has approved the treatment in advance.
  • Allo charges the CDCP fee — as of September 3, 2026, our fee for this service matches the CDCP fee grid, so your co-payment is normally your only cost. Our fees can change, so please confirm the price with the clinic before your appointment.
  • Linked service — we provide it at the clinic. Referred — a specialist colleague does it, at their fee. Ask us — depends on the case; leave your number below and we'll call you.

“Allo charges the CDCP fee” reflects our fees as of September 3, 2026. Our fees can change over time, so please confirm the price of your treatment with the clinic before your appointment.

Every service on the list is paid at the CDCP established fee, less your co-payment, and only within the plan's frequency limits (for example, a recall exam every 12 months, 4 units of scaling per 12 months for adults, 1 crown per tooth every 8 years, and complete dentures about once per arch every 8 years); the Benefits Guide has the limits for each code[5]. Sun Life, not the clinic, decides preauthorizations, and not every request is approved[3]. If dental visits make you anxious, see how we handle nerves.

What the CDCP does not cover

The Benefits Guide lists these as excluded at any time[5]. We still offer them; you would pay privately, always with a written price first.

Orthodontic services, including retainers, are currently not available under the CDCP[3].

Which treatments need preauthorization?

Preauthorization means Sun Life must approve the treatment before it happens, and not all requests are approved[3]. It applies to, among others[5]:

  • Crowns, cores and posts for crowns
  • Partial dentures, and immediate or overdentures
  • Re-treatment of an old root canal
  • Deeper sedation and general anesthesia
  • Services beyond the plan’s frequency limits

At Allo we prepare and submit the preauthorization, wait for Sun Life's decision, and only book the treatment once you know what is approved and what your share would be. The full list marks every item that needs it.

D / At Allo

How the CDCP works at Allo, step by step.

Government pages explain the program. This is the part they can't tell you: what actually happens between booking and paying at the desk.

  1. The waiting bench by the front window at Allo Dental Clinic
    01

Tell us you’re a CDCP member

Book online or call, and mention the CDCP. Have your member card or enrolment letter handy; we need your plan number, member ID and coverage start date.

  2. Dr. Rahmatian reviewing a panoramic X-ray on the chairside screen
    02

    We confirm your coverage

Before bigger treatment, we can send an estimate to Sun Life to confirm your coverage is active, what is covered, and how much the plan will pay.

  3. A chairside conversation before treatment at Allo Dental Clinic
    03

You get the numbers in writing

Your estimate separates what the CDCP pays from what you would pay: any co-payment, plus any difference between our fee and the CDCP fee. Nothing starts until you’ve seen it.

  4. Care in progress in a treatment room at Allo Dental Clinic
    04

    We bill Sun Life directly

After your visit the claim goes straight to Sun Life. You pay only your share at the desk, not the plan’s portion, and there is no reimbursement paperwork for you.

In your language
Our team speaks English, Farsi, French, Filipino and Mandarin, and we’re happy to walk through your coverage in whichever is most comfortable.
Whole households
Parents, kids and grandparents can all be CDCP members. Book family appointments back-to-back and we’ll sort each person’s coverage separately.
Children’s dentistry
Ontario programs too
If you also have Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Works or ODSP coverage, the CDCP pays first and we coordinate the rest between the programs, so you don’t have to.

Program coordination rules for Ontario are set by Health Canada[9]. Estimates and preauthorizations are confirmed by Sun Life, and the amount covered can differ from an estimate if plan rules or fees change before your visit[6].

Tell us you're a CDCP member when you book, and we'll confirm your coverage before you're in the chair.

E / Apply & renew

How do you apply, and when do you renew?

Applying is Service Canada's side of the story. Renewal is yearly, and the dates matter more than most people expect.

You apply for the CDCP online through My Service Canada Account or by phone at 1-833-537-4342, with your Social Insurance Number and last year's tax return filed[10]. Once enrolled you receive a letter with your plan number, member ID and coverage start date, then a welcome package and card from Sun Life[6]. Only care received on or after your start date is covered[6].

CDCP coverage ends every June 30 and never renews automatically; every member, including seniors, must renew each year[7].

The benefit year

Each CDCP benefit period ends on June 30. Coverage does not roll over by itself; membership is confirmed for each benefit year.

Renewal 2026–27

The renewal window for 2026–27 closed on June 1, 2026. Missed it? You can re-apply, but care received during a coverage gap is not reimbursed retroactively.

Renewal 2027–28

Renewals for the 2027–28 benefit year open in spring 2027. When your renewal letter arrives, act on it before the deadline and your coverage continues without a gap.

Renewal rules and dates: Government of Canada renewal page[7]. Application channels and required documents: how-to-apply page[10]. Sun Life runs the member portal and the official CDCP provider directory[13]. Questions about your eligibility or status belong with Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342[11]; questions about a visit at Allo belong with us at (416) 883-8000.

All FAQs
Yes. Allo Dental Clinic at 3455 Yonge St in North York accepts Canadian Dental Care Plan patients and bills Sun Life, the plan administrator, directly. You pay only your co-payment and any amount the plan does not cover, and we put those numbers in writing before treatment begins.
No, and it helps to know that going in. It costs nothing to apply or renew, but depending on your income tier you may have a co-payment of 0%, 40% or 60% of the CDCP fee. At Allo, our fees for covered services match the CDCP fee grid as of September 3, 2026, so your co-payment is normally the only cost for covered care; contact the clinic for current details.
No. Anyone with access to private dental insurance, through their own or a family member’s employer, a pension, a student plan or a purchased policy, does not qualify, even if they never enrolled or used it. Coverage through government programs such as Healthy Smiles Ontario or ODSP does not disqualify you.
Yes. Scaling is covered up to 4 units per 12 months for adults 17 and over, alongside a recall exam every 12 months and limited polishing. If your gums need more than the annual limit, we can request preauthorization from Sun Life for additional units, or give you the cost in writing before doing anything extra.
Root canal treatment is covered, and re-treating an old root canal needs preauthorization. Crowns are covered with preauthorization, up to 1 per tooth every 8 years. Complete dentures are covered about once per arch every 8 years; partial dentures need preauthorization. We handle the paperwork and wait for approval before starting.
No. Dental implants, bridges, veneers, teeth whitening, night guards and sports mouthguards are excluded from the CDCP, and orthodontic services are currently not available under the plan. We still offer these treatments; you would simply pay privately, with a clear written price before you decide anything.
Ten services on the CDCP list need Sun Life’s approval before treatment: crowns, cores and posts for crowns; partial dentures; complete immediate dentures and overdentures; re-treatment of a previously completed root canal; bonding for mobile teeth; post-surgical gum evaluations; conscious sedation; and deep sedation or general anesthesia. Anything beyond the plan’s frequency limits needs it too. At Allo we submit the request and wait for the decision before booking the treatment.
Because the CDCP pays its own fee schedule, not your dentist’s fee, and when a provider charges more than the CDCP established fee the difference is yours to pay, even at the 100% tier. At Allo this gap does not currently apply: our fees for CDCP-covered services match the CDCP fee grid as of September 3, 2026. Fee schedules change over time, so contact the clinic for up-to-date details.
No, and you should never be asked to. Sun Life can only reimburse oral health providers, not CDCP members, so if you paid the full cost yourself the plan could not pay you back. That is why direct billing matters: we bill Sun Life, and you pay only your share at the desk.
Bring your CDCP member card, or the plan number and member ID from your enrolment letter, plus photo ID. Make sure your appointment falls on or after your coverage start date, because care received before it is not covered. Arriving ten minutes early gives us time to confirm everything together.
No. Every member applies, and every member renews each year, including seniors. If a parent or grandparent needs a hand, Service Canada takes applications at 1-833-537-4342, and a delegate with legal authority can apply on someone’s behalf. Bring the enrolment letter to the first visit and we take it from there.
Every year. Each CDCP benefit period ends on June 30, and renewal for 2026–27 closed on June 1, 2026. If you missed it you can re-apply, but care received during a gap in coverage is not reimbursed retroactively. Renewals for the 2027–28 benefit year open in spring 2027.
